Road Diet Update FRIENDS OF IMODS:
The road diet was voted down last night by the Skokie Board of Trustees.
While emotions ran deep on either side of this issue, it was good to see our
downtown community come out and be heard. Downtown Skokie has a pulse and
we can all agree to work toward a better, more lively, productive downtown
community. I think most of us can agree that the Skokie Board of Trustees
should consider taking control of Oakton Street via jurisdictional transfer from
Cook County. Once owned, the Village will be able to control some of the
variables that can help to make Oakton a more user friendly thoroughfare.
These include, but are not limited to, speed limit changes, truck rerouting,
placement and timing of stop lights, street light type and placement and
streetscape decisions. The upcoming facelift of Oakton will be a very
trying time for merchants and residents alike. We must all work together
to help to make this the least disruptive project it can be. We will also
need the help of the entire community to support the merchants affected by the
upcoming construction. Please continue to spend your money with the
downtown merchants, they will need your help more than ever during the
construction period. Thanks again to everyone who worked hard on both
sides of the road diet issue. This is a great example of a community
coming together to work out some very difficult problems. At least we were
all part of the process, that is more than most communities will even consider.
We live in a great town, together we work to make it better!
